Friends of Cardigan Bay - Cyfeillion Bae Ceredigion
Developed research projects on cetaceans in the Bay with boat-based sighting surveys for bottlenose dolphins and a research project based on Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) studying Risso dolphin and harbor porpoise. We have also helped with other surveys around the Bay, and have contributed to national recording schemes.
Organized and published a three year study of the wintering birds of the Bay, showing the waters to be of international importance for certain species.
Successfully campaigned against the disposal of untreated sewage into the waters of the Bay.
Have led a strong campaign against the licensing of large areas to oil and gas companies for unrestricted development. This has led to the introduction of compulsory environmental assessment for ALL oil and gas developments around the UK, and work started in Cardigan Bay has now been taken up by other national organizations.
The Sarn's
Biological interest
While a more basic survey has being carried out on the largest and most northern reef ‘St Badrig’, very little detailed recording of sub-littoral species has taken place on Sarn-y-Bwlch at Tywyn, and Sarn cynfelin near to Aberystwyth.
FoCB is now engaged in this very exciting and pioneering work. With the commencement of the 2004 Sarn`s pilot surveys linked to future diving exploration.
Research and Surveys
This years pilot surveys have shown that a variety of wildlife is to be found out on the Sarn`s, including Bottlenose Dolphin, seals and a variety of bird species.
Future work planned for next year includes a more detailed underwater survey of Sarn Cynfelin, with the help of local divers we hope to expand on the very minimal existing knowledge that we have, and we also intend to liaise with Cadw who have expressed an interest in the possible archaeological aspect of the Sarnau and the surrounding sea area (the lost lands of Cantre’r Gwaelod).
Future Sea-Bird recording programmes are planned along with Atlantic Grey Seal monitoring and photo-id work. Encounters with Bottlenose Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise in the area will also be recorded.
